Clamp-style arms rely on compressive force against the desk edge, and on a shallow desk, that force has less surface area to distribute across than it would on a deeper one. This matters because a poorly torqued clamp on a 24-inch desk is more likely to rock or shift when you adjust the monitor, simply because there’s less desk mass behind it to resist the leverage. Structural Execution: What actually goes wrong

The most common failure mode isn’t the arm breaking; it’s drift, where the monitor slowly tilts downward over weeks of use because the tension mechanism wasn’t set correctly during install. Gas-spring arms like the Ergotron LX use a preset tension based on your monitor’s weight, and if you guess wrong on that setting during setup, you’ll see drift within the first month.
