60% Keyboard Review: Desk Footprint and Typing Speed Tested

Structural Execution: What actually goes wrong

The most common complaint with a first 60% board isn’t the layout; it’s case flex. A firm keystroke can cause smaller PCBs and cases with insufficient internal bracing to flex noticeably, particularly on boards under $60 that reduce internal frame costs. Of the four boards we tested, the Royal Kludge RK61 displayed the most flex, especially on the space bar and bottom row, whereas the gasket-mounted design of the Ducky One 3 Mini displayed very little. For the day-to-day feel of the board, case rigidity is more important than switch selection if you’re a heavy typist.

Another factor that people overlook when downsizing is keycap profile. Many 60% boards have a flatter, lower profile than full-size boards, which alters finger travel distance in a way that exacerbates rather than lessens the function-layer learning curve. Even though the low-profile option looks sleeker on a desk, a board with a standard OEM or Cherry profile, like the K12 Pro, will feel more familiar out of the box if you’re switching to 60% for the first time.

Get the NuPhy Air60 V2 if you don’t mind a quick learning curve with the function layer between typing speed, a small desk footprint, and wireless use. The Ducky One 3 Mini is a better option if you don’t mind using a wired keyboard and are more concerned with typing accuracy than space. The Royal Kludge RK61’s flexible case may initially irritate strict typists, so they should avoid it. Only if saving money is more important to you than the keyboard’s feel will the discount make sense.
